Scunthorpe’s long-awaited Burringham Bypass has received planning approval, clearing a major hurdle for a new road linking the town’s southern motorway junction with the rest of Scunthorpe.
The link will run from the M181 directly to Burringham Road, creating a southern gateway into the town. It is expected to provide a more direct connection between the motorway and communities including Ashby, Bottesford, Burringham, Yaddlethorpe and Messingham once it is built.
The bypass is also intended to reduce congestion at Berkeley Circle roundabout. Its approval means the scheme can move forward as part of wider plans for the area, although no timetable for construction has been given.
The road is a key part of the first phase of the wider Trent Vale development scheme, which was previously known as Lincolnshire Lakes before its recent rebrand.
As well as providing infrastructure for the new villages planned west of Scunthorpe, the bypass is expected to bring benefits to existing residents by offering a faster route to the motorway from the surrounding communities.
North Lincolnshire Council leader Cllr Rob Waltham described the approval as a significant step for both the bypass and the wider Trent Vale plans. He said progress on the roundabout would follow soon.
